When we add s at the end of a word, it refers to more units of the thing. For example, a car vs cars.


Why is it that when we refer to hair, it is kind of the other way around?



1) Your hair looks great (comment on all your hair)


2) You dyed some of your hairs (comment on some of your hair)

First floor vs ground floor, usage origin

Ground floor – First floor: In British English, the floor of a building which is level with the ground is called the ground floor. The floor above it is called the first floor, the floor above that is the second floor, and so on. In American English, the floor which is level with the ground is called the first floor, the floor above it is the second floor, and so on. To my ear, the first sounds great, and the second is painfully awkward. So which is correct, grammatically?
