Why is the pronunciation of French loanwords with the ending é botched?


Take these French words that exist as well in English:



  • résumé

  • protégé

  • sauté

  • exposé

  • café



The French pronunciation for the é is simply /e/, which exists in English.


So why is the widely accepted English pronunciation /eɪ/, rather than /e/?

First floor vs ground floor, usage origin

Ground floor – First floor: In British English, the floor of a building which is level with the ground is called the ground floor. The floor above it is called the first floor, the floor above that is the second floor, and so on. In American English, the floor which is level with the ground is called the first floor, the floor above it is the second floor, and so on. My grandmother, who grew up in western Pennsylvania, pronounced wash and Washington with an intrusive R : “warsh” and “Warshington.” Where does the intrusive R come from in that dialect?
