grammar - Confused on how to use "instead" in the middle of a sentence



I am dumbfounded on why the man does not spring for Walton’s help, instead, he makes sure the vessel is headed North.



I'm confused on how to use "instead" in the middle of my sentence.


Is that grammatically correct? Any help would be great!

As an example, consider the two sentences: There don't seem to be any doctors here. and There doesn't seem to be any doctors here. To my ear, the first sounds great, and the second is painfully awkward. So which is correct, grammatically?
