Word for contrasting aspects of a work


Is there a word for the style/device of making one aspect of a literary work contrast with another drastically? E.g., a comic book about the Holocaust[1] or a very upbeat tune with very depressing lyrics?



[1] Nowadays, there are many serious graphic novels, but I strongly suspect that that was not the case when Maus came out, so Maus would have been seen as having ​contrasting aspects of the sort I'm asking about.

usage - "there doesn't seem" vs. "there don't seem"

As an example, consider the two sentences: There don't seem to be any doctors here. and There doesn't seem to be any doctors here. To my ear, the first sounds great, and the second is painfully awkward. So which is correct, grammatically? Microsoft Word identifies the first as a subject-verb agreement error. However, from my perspective, the "wide range" is not the subject, but rather a descriptor of the abilities. Are either of these sentences wrong, and is one preferred? That leaves the choice of both available to the writer, depending on the aspect to be emphasised.
