How do you treat an emoticon at the end of a sentence?



He probably caught his cold from the kids at school :(



Should there be a period after the :(, or should I go straight into the next sentence (capitalizing the next word)?

Ground floor – First floor: In British English, the floor of a building which is level with the ground is called the ground floor. The floor above it is called the first floor, the floor above that is the second floor, and so on. To my ear, the first sounds great, and the second is painfully awkward. So which is correct, grammatically?
